It's Black History Month. I think it's important for all of us to remember where we've come from with respect to African Americas. We Americans set over for the new country with hopes of making things better for ourselves. If we don't set our sights high and use traumatic experiences such as slavery and 9/11 as vast learning opportunities, then we can prevent our country from being oppressive in the ways that our Founding Fathers overcame.
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
